Movie Reviews

For whatever reason, this weekend has been one of movies.

Starting with Crazy Heart. I liked it, but I am a big Jeff Bridges fan. David called it the "whiskey and vomit" movie.

Next was Nine. I liked the music, but as a movie - not so much. David just laughed when I asked how he liked it.

Amelia was next in line and we both liked it. But of course, I could watch Richard Gere all day long.

Today, finishing the line-up, was Flash of Genius. We have had this movie for over a year but David never wanted to watch it as he thought it would be boring. He was wrong. We both liked it.

Can I just spray some Pam down there?

We watched The Hangover awhile ago, eagerly anticipating the riotous comedy we were promised by friends and the trailer.

We were so disappointed. It was okay, but not near as funny as we hoped.

Tonight we watched Baby Mama and 20 minutes in we had laughed harder than the entire Hangover movie.

Watch it, if you haven't already. Full of stars and hilarious.

Not My Kind Of Date

Remember that movie - L.A. Story with Steve Martin and Sarah Jessica Parker? When they went out on their date, she took him for a high colonic. So 90's in Los Angeles I am sure, but nevertheless...on a date?

It has been awhile since I've heard much hub bub about colonics, besides the lemonade diet, which from what I understand works about the same.

Though in past few weeks my spam folder has been filling up with colon cleansers,
Colonix review, and the such.

Is it becoming a new fad? For a date, maybe?

Pop Some Popcorn

We've watched a few movies lately, some better than others.

Most recently, Changeling. I knew little about this movie before but was surprised and yes I will admit it - impressed with Angeline Jolie's a.k.a. skank performance. It is a dark movie, violent and sad. Even more so when you know it was a true story. I do recommend watching it.

An odd movie we've watched was Revolutionary Road. I love Kate Winslett and she and Leo's performances were great - but it was another dark movie. Dark like War of the Roses without the humor. Worth watching though.

On a lighter note, we watched Horton Hears A Who. It was great - creative, funny and heartwarming. I recommend it for adults and children alike.

An older movie that we never watched when it came out but finally have was Glory Road. I'm not a basketball fan, but it was a good movie. I like movies based on true stories.

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was about what we expected. Funny, but not the funniest ever. I loved Martin Lawrence in Nothing To Lose and he must have peaked at his comedic performance in that movie.

W. Not sure what we expected from this movie, but I have to say I enjoyed Will Farrell's HBO version better.

The Handmaids Tale - I read this book ten years ago and had I not, this movie would not have made much sense. But if you have read the book, it isn't bad.

The Secret Life of Bees - I liked this movie, almost as much as the book. That is saying a lot.

Huh?

If no one mentioned his name, I would have never known who that was last night. Didn't look like him, didn't sound like him.

Movie Holiday

We've spent the past few days watching movies...some old and some new.

We started with Charlie Wilson's War. If you haven't seen this one, I recommend it. Somehow we never managed to see it when it came out.

Next - Rendition. Again, somehow we missed this one. It was good, not as good as the first one, but good.

We actually left the house for the next one - Seven Pounds. When we decided to go out to the movies, I purposely did not choose Marley & Me because I knew it would make me cry. I haven't read the book, but any story with a dog means there will be something traumatic and sad happening. I am leaving this one to watch at home where a girl can cry in private.

So I chose Seven Pounds only knowing it was Will Smith (one of my all time favorite actors and he was an IRS agent). Great movie. I won't spoil it for you, but take Kleenexes - a box.

So much for not crying in public.

Next, The Happening. We are big fans of M. Night Shyamalan and this one was good.

Currently, while I am typing we are watching Disturbia. I'll let you know.

Indiana Jones Needs To Retire

We watched the last addition to the Indiana Jones series last night. I don't know what to say but - "ick".

It could honestly be the worst movie I've ever seen. The writing sucked, the effects were over the top and the acting was weak.

I don't enjoy saying this because I really enjoyed the first three - especially the first. You really believed the effects and it was non-stop action. However like most things in life, it has a lifespan.

Harrison Ford - it is time to let go.

We've lost a great one.

Ode to the late, great Paul Newman.

This is one of my favorite movies ever.

Appearances can be... deceptive.

We went to see Burn After Reading yesterday because well I couldn't stand to be in the house all day after hibernating in the dark all week.

So we took our life in our hands and ventured out through the gauntlet of Ryder Cup traffic outside our front door. OMG! You can't even imagine - I was totally unprepared. It had been busy all week and difficult to get out of our sub-division, but being Saturday - it was a hundred times worse. And for the record - people are idiots. Enough said.

My movie review: It was funny. My husband laughed until he was almost crying. It was a Coen Bros. movie so it was stupid funny, kind of like LadyKillers, Big Lebowski, etc.

I must say though that the star of the show was Brad Pitt. But not in the heart throb sexy manly way he usually is - oh no. This time he was funny and goofy in a Napoleon Dynamite kind of way.

Favorite line of the movie - out of Mr. Pitt's mouth of course:

"I thought you might be worried...about the security...of your shit. "

More Movies

Last week when I recapped the movies we've watched lately I totally forgot a couple. What can I say, I am senile.

This was pretty good. Different, especially for Robin Williams. Kind of a twist at the end, a little one.

This like the one above, was based on a true story. It was odd to see Jake Gyllenhaal dressed so goofy. But it is loaded with stars like Anthony Edwards, Robert Downy Jr., Mark Ruffalo and one of my favorite - Chloe Sevigny.

The New Siskel & Ebert

Over the past week we have been on a movie marathon. Here is our recap of the winners and losers:
Smart People - This was an interesting role for Dennis Quaid and Juno star Ellen Page. Not riveting and not exciting, just average.

Hard Candy - In a word? Twisted. I don't know if psychological thriller is the right description, but it certainly is another side to Juno. We do like Patrick Wilson whom we watched in the next movie as well.

Little Children - One of those movies that shows you several seemingly unconnected groups of people and as the movie progresses, they intersect. Some gratuitous nudity and sex, which of course with Patrick Wilson involved, I am not complaining.

In The Valley of Elah - We are big Tommy Jones' fans as well as Charlize Theron, so this wasn't a hard choice. It is a sobering reminder of what is going elsewhere to keep our asses safe.

Your Friends & Neighbors - Nothing like watching a 10 year old movie. It was different. The weird part is the actors keep connecting and weaving through the whole movie list. Jason Patrick was in this one and In The Valley of Elah.

You decide who is the winner and the loser. It is all about perspective anyway.

Insight

My husband told me last night that he thought Borat was the "best movie ever".

What does this say about him?

mamma mia

A friend and I went to see Mamma Mia this weekend. Let me start by saying I am a serious ABBA fan. Besides the music, I always believed they wrote the best lyrics - straight from the heart and not just fluffy stuff.

In fact this clip is my favorite ABBA song and Meryl does pretty good. The real painful emotion of the song comes out here.

The things I loved about this movie:

  • the actors and supporting actors who sang and dance weren't all 20 years old and size 2 - they were real people (as demonstrated in this clip)

  • real people who didn't always have the most perfect voice which is great
  • seeing Meryl Streep do the air guitar
  • the gorgeous location - gasp!
  • the gorgeous men - double gasp!

There is only one thing I didn't like about this movie:

  • Pierce Brosnan is gorgeous, but James Bond should not be singing. Remington Steele should remain aloof and suave. He actually appears to be in pain while singing - I know we were.

Go see this. It is totally worth watching and see if you can manage to not sing out loud in the theatre. I failed.

Also, don't get up and leave when the credits start rolling - the best part of the movie is right then.

I'm no Siskel or Ebert, but...

We finally watched Juno. I know, it has been out forever, but we are busy people. If it wasn't for On Demand we'd never see a movie.

We liked it. If you haven't seen it, you should. It is that subtle kind of humor that we like, all wrapped up with some life lessons.

Words Of Love

These are my favorite holiday candy. They rate right next to marshmallow peeps. I know they are nothing but sugar but I love the crunch!

What is your favorite holiday candy?

Our plans are simple tonight. Probably grab a pizza on the way home and share it while watching a movie. Then maybe a little hot tub in the snow!
I would like to watch a romantic movie, but will probably lose that battle. My favorite feel good romantic movie would have to be "Love Actually".

What is your favorite romantic movie?
