So I went back to the time of dinner parties with fine hors dourves and champagne cocktails. Some food history sites indicate this is the 30's, some the 40's - even into the 50's. I think of it as old Hollywood style in the late 40's; post war when life was good.
It made us want to pull out high heels, pointy bras, and Sinatra music - and that was just David.
Seriously, it was fun. I went with a trio of fine hors dourves:
Cheese PuffsEndive Spoons w/Lemon Herbed Goat Cheese
Cantaloupe Balsamic Basil Bites
Pink Champagne Cocktail
I confess now, the cheese puffs didn't puff. I have made cream puffs many times so I don't know what happened. I shrunk the recipe to feed just the two of us and I think I must have messed up the measurements or something. However, trying to make lemonade out of lemons, we ended up with some great herb cheese cookies (rofl). Though I didn't photograph those.

The hit of the night was certainly a tie. The endive spoons were scrumptious and the combination of cantaloupe and balsamic is amazing. No recipe to link to - I made this one up.

Inspired from last month's blog party where [eatingclub]vancouver brought pineapple basil balsamic treats - I decided to use the flavorful and plentiful cantaloupe our CSA is providing. I didn't make a reduction, just dripped a few drops of "good" balsamic on each one.

Cheers!

Appetizers and hor deurves (how do you spell hor doruvrversres anyway?) have always been my weak point. I NEVER serve them, because I can't think one up. Likewise, I've just discovered that I have trouble with "snack foods" to contribute to noshing on all day at the campsite.
I just picked up a book of finger food recipes, but I find most of them more work than the main course!
Ok. I'll work on it, because those endive spoons look DE-LISH!
That's ironic, because I do much better at appetizers (which is by the way how you spell hors....).
I often make entire meals (like this one) out of appetizers.
All looks good! Save some of the canteloupe bites for me...
will your brilliance never cease?!?!
love the endive cups
nejyerf: apparently it did - my cheese puffs didn't puff
What elegant appetizers! Love the punch! It was nice to get to "hang out" at the Blog Party with you.
Yummy looking apps. I will still eat the unpuffed puffs. I'll just take a little extra bubbly to go with them.
These are scrumptious! Exellent offerings- so glad you mde the party- see you next month :)
Oooh, the cantaloupe sounds like a great idea, and I love the look of the endive cups, too. Nice to 'meet' you at the party - I hope you had a good time!
Yum! I like the way you managed to make it both retro and fancy.
