On this day in 1962 comedian Ernie Kovacs was killed when he
crashed his Chevrolet Corvair into a light pole in Los Angeles
while driving in a rain storm. Not to minimize the tragedy for Mr.
Kovacs and his family, but that didn’t help the reputation of the
Corvair either. Just a few years later, in 1965, Ralph Nader
published Unsafe At Any Speed: The Designed in Dangers of the
American Automobile, and one of the cars he blasted without
mercy was the Corvair. Ralph had no fans in my family. We were
a Corvair family. My Aunt Jane bought a brand new Corvair in
1966, and not to be outdone by her daughter, my Grandmother
bought a new one for herself in 1968. I learned to drive in my
Grandmother’s Corvair. I loved that little car.
Daily affirmation: I can change any thought that hurts into a
reality that hurts even more.
