On this day in 1942 Enrico Fermi produces the first nuclear chain
reaction. He performed his experiments beneath the bleachers at
Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. Little-known, completely-
fabricated fact. That’s where we get the phrase “hot seat”. For
several years after his experiments, people were developing burns
on their backside. It’s all fun and games until someone gets cancer
from sitting on radioactive bleachers.
