Tramp Stamp was a close second.

NPR reported yesterday on the Word of the Year for 2009 as chosen by the New Oxford American Dictionary.

It was unfriend.

You might think this is a new word, but it actually dates back to 1659 where the usage of it was much the same. However, back then they scratched your name off a piece of parchment instead of clicking an icon on Facebook, but the result was the same. You were banished from being privy to the goings on of a particular individual's affairs.

Even more interesting was the words it beat out in this year's competition:

Sexting: I think we all know what this means
Birther: a conspiracy theorist who challenges President Obama's U.S. birth
certificate (give me a break)
Tramp stamp: my personal favorite

What elite crowd of past winners does this word now socialize with? Hypermiling, locavore, carbon neutral, and podcast.

Hey, that sounds like something I would have come up with.

I am nowhere near as witty as you, but honored that you think so.
