Cady's DNA test is finally back. Despite the 4-6 weeks advertised wait for results, it took us 8 weeks and that was because I contacted them twice and they finally emailed me the results.
So as far as response time, Canine Heritage gets a D. In communication after being contacted, they get an A. However, overall customer service is poor if they mislead you on turnaround time.
The results? First let me explain how they work.
Their software compares your dog against 100-300 genetic markers and reports it’s findings in three categories.
- Primary - this is the breed that represents the majority of the dog’s DNA makeup. Having a “primary breed” is rare in a mixed breed dog unless they have at least one purebred parent.
- Secondary - this breed has a strong showing in the DNA mix and is more influential but still makes up less than the majority of the dog’s DNA.
- Traces - which may be great grandparent and beyond, and are very small amounts with little influence on behavior and appearance.

Cady's results were:
- Primary - None
- Secondary - Miniature Pinscher
- Traces - Chinese Shar Pei
Summary? don't waste your money.
Addendum: Ever since Kim suggested that Cady has sable border collie in her we have done loads of research, i.e. Google. And we agree.
Her behavior is so border collie-like and when I look at photos of other mixed breeds, especially an American Eskimo/Border Collie mix - it looks just like Cady. In fact, she has been herding/hunting Oscar, our foster dog, who is twice her size.
So we are naming Kim as the winner! Forget what those idiots at the DNA place think, who needs them.
If Kim will email me her mailing address to melodyk99 at yahoo dot com, I will send her something special.
Thanks for playing.

What?! That's bogus - all that waiting and they didn't tell you anything. I still think I was right...but I forget what my guess was :D
(there should be an edit post feature to correct typos)
I would have guessed the breed was 1/2 wolverine, 1/2 Tasmanian fox.
I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am with Cady;s test results. I was thinking about doing this same test with Day-Z - I'm not going to bother now.
kim: watch your postal mail
james: she acts like that too
fmm: me too, they said any other breeds in her mix must be ones they don't validate - they list border collie, sheltie, american eskimo, australian shepherd as ones they valdiate - one or more of those are definitely in her. I also told them in the last email that I had ran this contest and many (cough cough) readers were disappointed in the response time, which I believe is the only reason I got the results by email
