I wince every time I see someone toss a cigarette out of their car window and feel a bit guilty. I am an ex-smoker and have been guilty of this many times in my previous life. But my ever increasing awareness of our environment and how precious the air we breathe has become makes me what to shout "what makes you think the world is your ashtray???"
Yesterday as I was walking to the parking garage a co-worker in front of me spat her gum out on the sidewalk. This shocked me for several reasons:
- She was 60ish and what I would have (as in prior to this incident) described as a classy southern lady - somebody's grandma for goodness sake!
- There were several people around - it wasn't like she thought she was alone.
- There is a trash can three feet from where she was - it is always there, we walk by it every day.
Shocked, shocked I tell you that there is such decline in simple manners and etiquette.
And as I have mentioned previously, it seems as bad if not worse in the elderly. With role models such as that, why do we expect our youth to behave better?
Off the soapbox now.
P.S. Totally unrelated: My new favorite song - video? not so much.
